bah humbug and the biggest loser

Last night I was watching The Biggest Loser on my DVR, my husband beside me working on his homework.  I watch it for inspiration because I need to lose some serious weight myself.

So anyway, Bob the trainer made a remark about how much he loves his job.  That got me thinking about what exactly a ‘day in the life of a trainer’ is like.  I thought to myself that it’s probably pretty fun — you get to interact with people one on one, they’re PAYING you, and you can wear really comfortable clothing and horse around all day.  I imagine there are some drawbacks (such as marketing yourself, which I hate).

I said to my husband that maybe we should set a goal of becoming personal trainers ourselves.  It was an idle remark.  But think of the motivation it could bring to keep up with a fitness regimen!  I mean, who’s going to hire a flabby ass chick to help them? And if you actually were successful in becoming a trainer, you’d pretty much guarantee that you’d be able to keep in shape even after the big weight loss was accomplished.

My husband immediately pooh-poohed the idea.  Personal trainers go to SCHOOL for that stuff.  You can’t just be one because you thought it sounded fun.  Of course, I know that many fitness gurus study exercise physiology, get certifications and all that.  But geez! It’s not like you have to ACTUALLY BECOME ONE to have such a goal, and for it keep you motivated.  Aside from the fact that you actually CAN become one without the formal schooling, if you reallly wanted to.  It’s not like being a doctor or lawyer, after all.

What a killjoy! So I thought I’d bring it to you folks… what do you think of the idea of using such a goal to motivate you, and possibly even seeing it through?  And if any of you ARE personal trainers, can you fill me in on your typical workday?
